Handwritten quote and signature on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of an inner forearm with a handwritten-style quote in black fine line script, followed by a stylised signature-like mark beneath it. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink sits crisply against pale skin. The black and grey photo is taken straight on, with a dark printed shirt filling the background.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the cable on the grass. You all think the Haunted House is the scariest thing on this field, and I'll not argue, because I've watched grown men climb out of it white as paper. But the worst night I ever saw belonged to a boy called Eli Harrow, nine years old, who went through that ride alone and came out with no breath left in him.

His mam had gone off with the chip van, so it was Vin Kettering who found him, the sign painter who had done every skeleton and grinning ghoul on the front of that ride with a brush no thicker than a hair. Vin knelt on the wet boards and asked what was wrong. Eli said the ghosts had been real. Vin said he knew, because he'd painted them, and paint was all they were. The boy didn't believe him. So Vin took a biro from his apron pocket and wrote on the boy's forearm, in his slanting, careful hand, the words Eli needed most.
Darlin', you'll be ok. Then Vin signed it the way he signed every board on the fairground, with a flourish like a wave going out. The ink stayed blurred and blue for a week, and Eli kept it there through three towns and two wet Sundays. Every time the ghosts came creeping back at night, he held his arm to the lamp and read the words over, slow, like a prayer, and the ghosts lost their nerve.
I'll tell you the strange part. Vin packed up his brushes the autumn after, and nobody saw him again on any ground. But Eli, grown and grey now, still carries that wrist in his coat pocket. Mind, the carousel's warming up, so off you go.
