Script quote tattoo on a leg
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a handwritten-style script quote in two lines, reading 'She is a soldier in the war against herself'. It uses thin, even black linework with no shading, and the letters have a slightly flowing, looped form. The photo is greyscale and taken straight on, with the text centred across a smooth area of skin against a dark background.

The Kessel crossing ran nights only in February, and by two in the morning Ilse Varga and I had long run out of things to say to each other. The woman in the blue hatchback handed over her papers without a glance, which is unusual. Most people watch the booth. She watched the rain running off the barrier arm, as if she were counting the drops.

Her papers were in order. What wasn't in order was the letter she kept folding and unfolding in her lap, its creases gone soft from handling. Ilse asked her to step out, and she did, slowly, holding the paper against her coat. Before anyone could ask for it, she read the first line aloud in the flat voice of someone repeating a rule she had made for herself: she is a soldier in the war against herself.
The handwriting was looping and careful, the kind a mother uses when she wants a child to be able to read it years later. The second line was smudged where a thumb had rested on it too long. I asked whether she had somewhere to sleep on the other side. She said she had a cousin in Lenz, and a room that was hers for now. I asked whether she wanted me to call anyone. She shook her head and said the letter was enough company.
I stamped her papers, handed them back, and lifted the arm. She drove off without looking in the mirror. Ilse turned up the heater and said nothing for a while. I kept seeing the words in my head, written in ink that had dried into the page, and behind me the rain went on counting.
