Handwritten quote on the side of the torso
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a handwritten-style lettering tattoo in three lines on bare skin, reading Thuder Only Happens Wlen Its Raisinl. The lines are black, with thin, even strokes and little shading, and the text sits centrally across the flank. Blue denim and a hand at the edge of the frame frame the skin, and the image is well lit with no visible background detail.

Hob the scribe had been at the wine since Lammas, so when the king asked for a decree on the weather, the words that came out of his pen were not quite the words the king had spoken. The proclamation was nailed to the gate of Mossgate before anyone thought to read it through. Thuder only happens wlen its raisinl, it said, in letters that wandered like drunk geese across the parchment.

The king, who had been woken three nights running by thunder rolling over his bedchamber, read it twice and wept with gratitude. He ordered the bell-ringers to sound the rain-bell whenever the sky grew dark, and the thunder was to be kept for those afternoons alone. Farmers dragged their washing in at the first grumble of cloud. The miller's wife sold her umbrella to a passing goose.
Hob's daughter Maud scraped ink off her father's cuffs and read the decree again by candlelight. She saw the gap in it, the way one crooked letter could turn a law sideways. She took a pot of black ink and a stick to the gate, but the king's guards had already set a dozen men with buckets beneath the sky.
The next morning the clouds came over the palace roofs grey and heavy, and the king stood on the battlements with his arms folded. He waited for the rain to finish, then shouted at the thunder to come on. It did not come. Below him the bucket men stood in the wet, and far off over the hills the thunder sat quietly, waiting for the rain to come first, the way the decree said it should.
