Live without regrets script on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the words Live without regrets written in flowing black script across the upper back, running diagonally from the shoulder blade area. The letters have varied thickness and connecting strokes, and a looping swash extends beneath the final words. The ink is solid black on lightly toned skin, and the image is framed tightly on the tattoo with a dark strap visible at the left edge.

The mallet had been ringing against the stone since first light, and Ysolde Brack had given up trying to read the lintel from the ground. Sixty feet up, the old lord's letters were furred grey with lichen. Only the loop beneath the last word still showed its edge, a curl of carved line that swung out over the gate like a rope somebody had dropped.

"Live without regrets," Tobias Reeve read aloud from the scaffold, a torch clamped under one arm. He sounded less impressed than the estate brochure wanted. "Sounds like the sort of thing a man carves just before he sells the woods."

"Then he'd have sold them," Ysolde said, and climbed up to the planks with a soft brush and a bucket of water warm enough to be pleasant on her wrists. Each stroke lifted green dust from the cuts. The loop came clean first, then the tail of the d, then the stubborn middle of without.

Under the ninth letter she found a second scratch, shallow and wandering, cut by someone with no skill and a nail for a tool. It said only a pair of initials and a year, and beneath that, smaller, "I did not, and I would again."

She read it twice. Reeve, below, asked if she had finished. She told him no. By dusk she had brought every letter back to its original sharpness, all but the scratched lines, which she left under their moss. The loop she brushed until it shone wet in the last light, and she thought how easily a man could promise a thing to a wall. Stone holds a sentence for centuries without asking whether it was true.
