Right, sit down, you're letting the cold in. Ta. My mother had a saying about the weather, and she'd give it to anyone who stood still long enough, which in Hull meant the gulls and the rent man. Thunder only happens when it's raining, she'd say, and we'd nod like it was scripture, because she had the handwriting for scripture. Round, careful, every loop finished off. Nobody on our street could read a gas bill the way she could.

The trouble came the winter the dole office sent a letter she couldn't make head nor tail of. She sat at the kitchen table under the one bulb with the letter flat under her palm and a biro in the other hand, and she copied her saying out on the back of an envelope to see it straight. Only her hand had gone shaky by then. The R in raining came out like a bent nail, and the I looked like it had wandered off. She studied it a long while. Then she laughed, the proper laugh, the one that sent the cat out of the room.

Dad wanted to fix it. He had a sign-writer's brushes in the shed and offered to paint it properly on the board above the pub door. She said the mistake was the honest bit. So the envelope stayed pinned by the kettle until the damp got it, and I've still got a photograph somewhere, the spelling sharp as a tack.

Now drink up. The sky's clear over the Humber, and it's not going to thunder tonight, whatever the forecast says.
