Handwritten quote on the thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a thigh with the words "don't forget to love yourself" written across it in two lines of thin, black, handwritten-style script. The linework is fine and even, with the letters sitting on the skin without shading. The ink is black on a pale skin tone, and the cream knit garment at the top of the frame sits above the tattoo.

The lamp has to be wound every four hours, so you will be awake when the tide turns, and you will resent it for a week before you stop noticing. Mr Pascoe left the logbook open on the table with a pencil laid through the spine, which is how you know he meant to come back. Read the last three pages before you touch the clockwork. His hand leaned forward as though it were walking into a wind, and he wrote everything down: the fog, the seals on the slipway, the cold tea.

On the third night a trawler came in too close to the Mare Rock. You watched its red light swing wide and then swing back, and you sounded the horn twice, the way the book says, and sent the beam out across the black water only to have it return empty. Nobody answered. You wrote that down as well, in your own careless capitals, and then felt foolish, because a logbook is for ships and not for lonely men who talk to the sea.
Pascoe's last entry sits near the foot of the final page, squeezed in beside a tide table in pencil gone silver with age: don't forget to love yourself. Under it, smaller, he has written Tuesday and then crossed it out. You have no idea what Tuesday meant. You only know the relief boat found his tea still warm on the sill on the Wednesday.
So you wind the lamp at four and again at eight, and you make the tea properly, with the leaves warmed first. When the early boat goes past at dawn, you lift a hand to it, because somebody on the water should be looking.
