Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote runs across two lines on the lower back, reading The pain you feel today... is the strength you feel tomorrow. The thin, even linework is set against a warm skin tone, with a grey top and waistband framing the lower edge of the image.

The snow came in the night before the lambing, and by first light the top field was one white sheet with the fence posts poking through like teeth. I was up to my thighs in a drift when the ewe with the torn ear went down. Her lamb was half out and not moving, and I knelt there with my arms inside her, cold to the elbow, certain I had lost it. Dad was back at the barn with the quad. I could hear him swearing at the gate.

The lamb lived. I rubbed it with straw until it sneezed, then tucked it into the feed shed beside the stove. Pinned above the bench was the card Gran wrote for me when I was nine, her joined-up letters leaning into each other: The pain you feel today... is the strength you feel tomorrow. I had rolled my eyes at it for years. That morning I read it three times with my fingers still stinging.

Dad came in stamping, said nothing, and poured two mugs of tea so strong the spoon stood up. We drank them at the bench without talking. Then I took a pen from the jar and copied the card out again for my sister in Leeds, following Gran's loops exactly, because her hand was the only one I trusted to keep the words steady.

Her reply came in February, folded around a snowdrop pressed flat as paper. Underneath she had written only: Tell me when the strength arrives. I wrote back that it had already come, the lamb was up and sucking, and then I went out to count the ewes with the first thaw running off the roof.
