Ada had the ladder lashed to the third bough before the dew was off the grass, and she was already cursing the wasps that had found the windfalls under the Bramley row. Her father would have sent the boy up with the pole saw. The boy had gone to Maidstone in the van with a cough, so it was Ada, and the wooden ladder that leaned on her shoulder like a tired friend.

The ladder's near rail had a line of pencil along it, old and grey, that her grandmother had written the summer the orchard flooded. The words ran the whole length of the wood, leaning the way Nan leaned when she wrote lists on the backs of seed catalogues. Ada had never asked what they said. She climbed, and the rail pressed her ribs, and the words went up beside her hand rung by rung until the last one sat level with the small cross her grandmother had nailed above the barn door.
At the top she could see the whole valley: the river gone brown and wide, the hop poles lying down in the meadow, the church tower standing in its own island of mist. She picked two apples and put them in her apron. One had a split where a bird had been. She ate that one, warm from the sun, and it tasted of cider and of something she could not name.
Coming down, she read the rail from the top, which was the wrong way round, and the words came out differently. Nan had never once been moved, not by the flood, not by the bank manager, not by the men from the council. Ada put her palm flat on the grey pencil and felt the grain under it. Then she went to find the cough sweets for the boy, because the wasps were still at the windfalls.
