Handwritten script quote on the side ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows three lines of cursive script tattooed on skin, reading "and in the end we will always have each other". The lettering is drawn in thin, even black linework with slightly uneven strokes that mimic handwriting. The skin is warm-toned and softly lit, and the lines are sharp against it, with the text running diagonally across the frame.

Her brother's letter was folded inside the lining of her coat, the paper gone soft as cloth from being unfolded so many times. Dragomir had written it in pencil on the back of a seed catalogue, and the last line had smudged where he pressed too hard. She knew it by heart anyway. "Open the bag," the guard said, and she did, and he lifted out the letter, read it with his lips moving slightly, then looked up. "Who wrote this?"

The guard turned the paper over, found nothing on the seed catalogue side but a list of onions and beans, and turned it back. He read the last line again, slower this time, and something in his face gave way a little. He stamped the passport without looking at it and slid it under the glass. "Go on. The road's getting worse."
Snow had started while she was inside. Across the white strip of no man's land, under a sodium lamp at the far barrier, a figure in a grey coat was lifting one hand, and she saw that the smudge on the paper had only ever been pencil, pressed too hard by someone who had been sure of the ending.
