"We're all mad here" script on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a script quote, "We're all mad here", written across the inner forearm in a flowing calligraphic hand. The lettering is set in dark ink with smooth, even strokes and tapered flourishes on the capitals and the looped letters. The warm, soft lighting and brown patterned background sit behind a beaded bracelet at the wrist, which is in the top right of the frame.

The porter says there is a signal failure at Norton Bridge and that we should all be patient. Mrs Pargeter opposite has already bought three packets of shortbread and a copy of the Radio Times she has no intention of reading.

You will remember what Father used to say when the wireless went funny: that the whole country was off its head and only the trains were honest about it. I have been thinking about that all afternoon, watching a man in a grey overcoat argue with the ticket machine as though it had insulted his mother. Then the station clock jumped forward a full four minutes and nobody so much as blinked. That is when I decided the cat was right, the one in Father's old book with the grin that hung about after the rest of it had gone. We are all mad here, I thought, and it was almost a comfort.
I am not coming to the wedding in a hurry, Hal, and I will not pretend otherwise. I have bought a hat I cannot afford and a return ticket I may not use. If the 7.15 arrives I will be on it, with the hat in my lap and this letter in my coat, and you can tell Margaret the bride's sister is running late, which for once will be true.
The porter has just called out the Manchester connection, and the platform is moving like a tide. If this letter does not reach you, assume I am still here, perfectly sensible, waiting for a train that has decided to be somewhere else. Yours, Ruth.
