Hannya mask on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A horned hannya demon mask with a open, snarling mouth sits at the centre of the design, surrounded by scrolling smoke or cloud shapes. The mask is rendered in smooth black and grey shading with soft highlights on the brow and cheeks, and the linework is bold. The tattoo fills the forearm and is shown against a dark shirt and a plain background.

Sit closer, the fire wants feeding and so do you. Now, the wood above Harrow Cross, where the birches lean in to hear everything. Ansel Pell carved masks for the harvest players, and he was the best in three valleys, though nobody liked to say so to his face. He cut them from green alder, let them dry in the loft for a season, then painted them the colours of whatever they were meant to be.

One autumn a woman came up the track in a grey cloak, her boots soaked to the knee, and asked him for a face that would send her husband out of her house for good. Horns, she said. Teeth. A mouth that opened wider than any mouth should. Ansel carved it three nights running by the stove. On the fourth, the wood went smooth as cream under his blade, and he could not find the lines he had meant to cut. There was only smoke curling round the brow, horns coming through it like branches in fog.
He took it down to her at dusk. She turned it over, held it to the last of the light, and laughed, soft and terrible. 'You've made it truer than I asked,' she said, and tied it on before she walked away. By morning the valley was quiet. The husband had gone down to the river and never come back up, and Ansel's loft had begun to smell of rain that never fell. Every mask he has carved since has a little cloud at its edges, if you look close enough.
So when you take the Harrow path after dark, don't stare at the birches. And if a grey cloak comes up the track asking for a face, carve her something gentle and take your time over it. Listen now. That knocking is the loft door, and it wants letting in.
