The night porter at Gallowmere Halt had kept the lamps lit for thirty years, and he never let the last train go without checking the signal box for spiders. Old Tobias Wren said the webs were the station's bookkeeping. Each strand was a ticket somebody had bought and never used.

One October the webs came thick across the footbridge, grey and stretched like wet cloth, and a bat hung from the iron girder above the ticket hatch, asleep with its wings folded like an umbrella. Tobias swept at the cobwebs and the bat did not wake. On the last Thursday of the month a young woman came off the late train with a single trunk and asked him for a ticket to the end of the line, to the place where the rails stop. He told her there was no such ticket. She said there was, and showed him a card stamped with a spider's web in gold.

He knew then what the webs were counting. Every fare they had caught was a passenger who had wanted to leave and had found the road home instead. He sold her the ticket anyway. A ticket is a promise, and he had never broken one. She walked out along the tracks with her lamp swinging, and the bat unfolded above her, and the spiders on the lower girders turned their small bodies to watch her go.

Tobias swept the footbridge clean that morning and found the web gone. The bat was gone too. Only the gold card lay on the step, and on its back someone had written in neat black ink: Return fare paid.
