Treble clef on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black treble clef sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The linework is clean and even, with the clef drawn as a single fine outline filled with dark ink. The skin tone, dark denim jeans and white lace top make up the rest of the frame, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The bells of Carrowmere had stopped ringing the week the old bell-founder died, and Lady Ismay Thorne had been sent up the tower to fetch the clerk's copy of the tuning book before the harvest fair. She climbed the stair with a lamp in one hand and the other pressed against the cold wall, counting steps the way her father had taught her to count beats.

The book lay open on a lectern under a dusty cloth. Its staves had been ruled in iron-gall ink, and at the start of every line sat the same curling sign, a looped spiral that wound round a single line and dropped a dot into the lowest space. The clerk called it the key that unlocks the rest. Ismay had always thought it looked like a sleeping snake, or a question mark that had given up.
She did not take the book at once. Instead she sat on the step with the lamp at her knee and sang the first line under her breath, until the bell ropes below answered with a note that was just slightly flat. Nobody in the kingdom had ever managed to fix that bell. Now she understood why. The sign had been drawn for a voice that had gone missing, and the bell had been waiting for someone to read it aloud.
When the fair opened, the town heard the bells ring true for the first time in a generation. The clerk swore the curling sign on the page had grown a shade darker overnight. Ismay locked the book in her chest and never told him she had only sung the first line.
