Be happy script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black script reading be happy runs across the inner forearm, with a single continuous hairline stroke extending from both ends of the word. The linework is even and delicate, with no visible shading. The arm is photographed against a plain grey textured wall, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Hush now, the good part is coming. Every summer Dorothy Maddox flew a red paper kite off the cliffs at Penhallow, and every summer the wind tried to take it from her. She had a ball of waxed linen in her apron pocket and a tin of boiled sweets, and she would sit on the harbour wall with her sister Mabel and tell the gulls exactly what she intended to do with them.

One August the kite snapped free over the water and sailed past the breakwater, a red diamond getting smaller and smaller. Mabel wept and said it was gone. Dorothy did not weep. She ran down the slip, knotted her line to a rusted bollard, and walked the length of the pier with the cord pulled taut between her fingers, the way you'd lead a horse that didn't trust you. A fisherman shouted that she would be dragged into the sea. She told him the sea had never once managed to drag a person who kept their feet planted and their hands busy.

The kite came down on the mudflats, torn but whole, and a boy from the next village was sitting beside it with the tail in his lap, bawling, because nobody had ever run after him for anything. Dorothy knelt in the cold mud, mended the tear with her own thread, and pressed a boiled sweet into his fist. On the spine of the kite she wrote two words in pencil. They were the only advice she ever gave anyone that mattered: be happy.

So raise your glasses to the string, and to the two of you holding on to it. Her line never needed to be strong enough to hold the kite. It only needed to keep you both within reach.
