Five birds in flight on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows five small black silhouetted birds in flight, arranged in a diagonal line that runs up the inner forearm towards the wrist. The birds have simple solid outlines with no shading, and the ink is crisp and dark against the skin. The subject's hand rests near their face at the top of the frame, and the background is a warm, dim interior with a white knit jumper cuff visible at the bottom.

You learn the count before you learn the names. On Scarrow the old keeper's rule is that you tally the birds leaving the island at first light and write the number in the logbook beside the date, even when the number is nothing. Your aunt taught you with pebbles in a biscuit tin. Five came off the cliff that morning, and you wrote 5 and underlined it twice, because it was the first time in a month the flock had been whole.

The boat came on Tuesday with the post and a man from the mainland who wanted to know why you still kept a logbook when the light ran itself. You told him the birds had never read the automatic instructions. He laughed and asked where the others were. You pointed west, where the five went each dawn in a loose diagonal, one leading and the rest stepping up behind as though climbing a stair made of wind.

Your aunt used to say a line was only a line until someone stopped watching it, so you keep watching. On Thursday only four came off the cliff. You waited with the pencil over the page until the gulls had settled and the sun was on the water, then wrote 4 and left the rest of the line blank.

That evening you went down with the tin and dropped a pebble for each of them, the way she taught you. At the foot of the rocks you found the fifth, wings folded like a shut book, not hurt, only tired. You carried it up inside your coat and set it on the cliff edge at dawn, facing west. Four rose. After a breath the fifth lifted off the stone and took its place at the back of the line, and you wrote 5 in the book again.
