Black and grey sketch-style tattoo of a hare pierced by three arrows, covering the upper arm.

Hare with arrows on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo of a hare seen from the side, standing upright with three arrows embedded in its back and shoulder. The linework is loose and sketchy with overlapping outlines, while the fur is built from fine hatching and stippled dots for texture. The image is shot close up in soft daylight, with the design filling most of the upper arm against a dark sleeve.

The hare had stood in the orchard long enough that the apple trees had stopped minding her. Every evening at the turn of the light she sat up on her hind legs between the rows of Bramley and Russet, ears laid back, nose working at the wind that came over the wall from the village. The gardener's boy, Tomas, had three arrows he had made from ash and goose feathers, and he swore on his mother's bread that he would have her before the frost.

He shot the first one from the gate and it stuck in her shoulder. She did not run. She turned her long head slowly and looked at him across the grass, the way the old woman at the mill looked at a sack of flour that had come up short. He shot the second one from the water butt and it went in beside the first. She sat there with them standing out of her like the pale stalks of a bolted leek, and she waited, and he understood that she was waiting for the third.

He did not shoot. He went home without his bow and told his mother the hare was too clever for a boy. His mother said nothing, only pulled the bread from the oven and set it on the sill to cool. In the morning there were three arrows laid side by side on the doorstep, feathers out, the shafts unbroken and clean. Nobody in the village ever learned whether the hare had pulled them out herself or whether someone had been kind enough to do it for her.
