Mechanical steampunk owl on a branch
Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large owl perched on a branch, its body and face built from visible gears, cogs, pipes and riveted plates. A small top-hatted figure sits on its head. The linework is bold and the shading mixes solid black areas with fine stippled dots, giving depth to the feathers and mechanical parts. The image is entirely black and grey and the design fills most of the frame against a darkened background.

The owl has been wound for nine winters, and tonight you are the one who turns the key. Under the big top the sawdust has gone grey and the rigging creaks like an old ship. Mr Ambrose Pell, who once billed this creature as the Brass Night Hunter, sleeps in the caravan with his boots on, and the last crowd you counted was four children and a dog that belonged to the ticket seller.

You climb the ladder to the gantry where the owl waits on its branch of painted pine. Its brass eyes catch the single work lamp. Someone, years ago, fitted a tiny top-hatted figure to its crown, a porcelain gentleman who has outlasted every ringmaster you have known. You polish his hat with your sleeve out of habit. The gears inside the owl start with a sound like a cough, then a tick, then the slow patient turning that made Pell weep the first time he heard it.
Tonight the wheel in its chest jams. You hold the lamp close and find a single cog bent by the cold, a tooth no bigger than a grain of rice. You work it free with a hairpin and a drop of oil from the lamp, your breath fogging the brass, and while your fingers are busy you think about the town down the valley where the mill closed and the lights went with it.
When the mechanism catches, the owl swivels its head a full half turn and looks straight at you, as if it had been waiting all along for someone to notice it was still running. The top hat tips. Below, the big top sways, and for one breath the whole empty tent hums with the sound of something that refuses to stop.
