Black and grey roses on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two large roses, one near the top and one lower down, with dew-like droplets on the petals and dark leaves around them. A thin swirling ribbon runs between the flowers, and a faint butterfly is partly visible at the top edge. The work uses fine shading and smooth tonal gradients in black and grey on a dark background.

Agnes had swept the same flagstones three times before the stranger came stamping in out of the drift, a grey bundle over one shoulder and a strip of red cloth knotted at his wrist. Her father was asleep by the hearth with his boots still on. The snow had buried the lane to the height of the gate, and nobody had paid for a bed since the thaw failed to come.

He asked for nothing but a candle and the table by the window. He unrolled a square of linen and laid out a rose, grey as wet slate, its petals so finely shaded that Agnes leaned close to be sure it was not carved. Beads of melt sat along every edge, as though the flower had walked through rain on its way indoors. Dark leaves curled beneath it like hands held out for coins. "Where does it grow?" she asked. "In a garden under the ice," he said, "where two sisters keep the river between them."
He told her how the taller sister bloomed in ash and the lower one hugged the ground, and how a silver ribbon of water ran between them that never froze. Whoever crossed it on the coldest night of the year could take one petal home, but only if they did not look back at the path. The candle guttered. When Agnes turned to ask the rest, the chair was empty and the linen was folded square on the sill.
In the morning the lane was clear to the gate, and her father swore he had heard no door. On the windowpane, where the stranger's bundle had rested, a single droplet clung to the glass and did not run. Agnes pressed her thumb to it. It was cold as a well, and when she lifted her hand a petal lay there, grey and damp, as if it had been out all night in the dew.
