The tin sign outside the café had lost its paint years before I took the lease, but every July the riders still pulled in beneath it, peeling off gloves and asking if the kettle was hot. Most were weekend men with new leathers and nervous knees. Dai Morrow was not. He came up the switchbacks on a black machine with a flame scroll painted down the tank, and he asked for two sugars in his tea, though he swore he never took sugar.

He spent the afternoon at the table by the window, drawing on the back of a bill. A winged crest, a shield with a bar across it, letters swinging out like ribbon, and flames curling along the bottom like something trying to get out of the page. When I asked who it was for, he said his brother, who had never once ridden in the rain. I told him the mountain didn't care who was brave. He laughed and said that was exactly why he liked it up here.

He left before the cloud came down, and the sugar bowl was still full. Three weeks later I found the drawing folded inside the tea caddy. Under the flames, in pencil, he had written: left it for the next wet one.

I pinned it to the frame beside the door, under the rusted sign, where the rain runs off the eaves and never quite reaches.
