The rain has got into the shed again, Ruth, so mind the puddle by the bench before you sit. I found Dad's old enamel tin in the corner, the one with the blue rose on the lid, its petals gone chalky with damp. Under the lid was a letter addressed to you in his square hand, folded four times, with a pressed leaf stuck to the crease like a bookmark he forgot to remove.

It was written the week before the summer run to Holmfirth. He had been courting Maud Penhale, who sold cut flowers from a cart on Tuesdays and laughed at the sign he had painted for his bike: a red heart with black flames licking up its sides, a cream scroll slung across it with the name in looping script. He said the orange marigolds at the foot of it were for her, because she told him they were the only blooms in the market that did not wilt before she got them home.

The turn was at the bottom of the page. He had not gone to Holmfirth. Maud's cart wheel cracked on the hill outside the village, and he stayed in the lane until dark, bent over it with a spanner and a lantern while the others rode on without him. He wrote that he was sorry he had missed the run and sorrier that he was glad, and that the little tin shield stamped on the base was the only thing he had ever made that she asked to keep.

I never posted it, so you will have to forgive him the late arrival. Take the tin home. Set the rose to the window where the light is kindest, and you will see the petals hold their blue a good while longer than they have any right to.
