A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Maren and the Lark put out from Skerra on the same grey morning, and their skippers had not spoken since the spring their nets were cut loose in the same tide. Nobody in the harbour could say who cut them. Tobias Quoy steered the Maren with his jaw set, and Edda Hale kept the Lark on the far side of the channel, and the herring, when they went looking, were on the middle ground where both boats wanted to be.

The fog came down before the bar. Quoy lost the church tower and Hale lost the buoy, and both boats turned in circles while their men shouted at each other to be quiet. Then two sea eagles lifted off the cliff and spread their wings over the water, one above the other, so wide that the spray seemed to fall away from them. They flew out low, and each skipper saw a bird go ahead of his bow and throw a shadow on the sea that the light could follow.

They followed. The birds kept exactly level, neither one gaining a feather on the other, and the boats kept level too, until the Maren and the Lark came out of the fog at the same moment above the shoal. The nets went down. Both boats were full to the gunwales before noon, and the eagles climbed back to the cliff and folded themselves into the rock.

When Quoy and Hale came in, neither would say which of them had been led, and the harbour has never settled it. Ask a Skerra child and they will point to the cliff and say the eagles were only keeping pace.
