Harley Quinn character on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A seated, cartoon-style female jester figure in a red and black costume with a white-collared jester hat and mask-like face paint. The bold outlines are filled with smooth shading and the diamond pattern on the costume is picked out in solid black. Red, black and grey inks dominate against the pale skin, and the figure is centred on the leg.

Ada Penhallow had sewn the diamonds on the costume herself, black on red, one patch at a time, because the wardrobe woman at the Coronation Fair had gone home with a fever and nobody else in Millbrook could tell a bias cut from a bolt of cloth. The jester was meant to perch on the edge of the booth and wink at the boys who lost at the coconut shy. It was Ada's job to make them come back with another sixpence.

On the Thursday before the fair closed, the lamps along the midway would not stay lit. Walter Gort, who ran the generator and the dodgems and considered himself the only grown man in the valley, swore the wiring had been chewed by rats. Ada knew better. She climbed the rope ladder to the rigging anyway, bells jingling at her wrists, and found a brown wren nesting in the bulb housing, five pale eggs laid in a cup of baling twine and the frayed end of a flag.
She did not tell Walter. She told the wren, quietly, that the midway could wait a week. Then she came down, took off the hat, and sat on the cold step of the booth with her chin on her knees while the red cloth went dark in the dusk and the first lamp along the row gave up with a small pop.
Walter came round the caravans at last with a torch and a face like a wet Sunday. "Rats," he said, and Ada let him believe it. The bulb was lit now, the wren had a roof over her eggs, and the jester on the step below kept very still, grinning at nothing, waiting for the boys to come back for their sixpence.
