Alice and the Cheshire Cat on an upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large colour tattoo on an upper arm shows a cartoon-style Alice with blonde hair and a blue and white dress, resting her chin on her hand. The Cheshire Cat grins from the tree on the left and a striped pink and red tail curls in on the right, with a green leafy skirt and a pocket watch at the bottom. Bold outlines and smooth colour shading are set against a pale skin background and dark surroundings.

Nobody at the Ashcombe Road reunion remembered that I was the one who had sewn the rabbit ears on for the Year Nine play, so I stood under the faded bunting with a paper plate of sausage rolls and waited to be recognised. Priya Shah found me first. She still wore her dad's pocket watch on a chain, the same one she had swung about during Alice, and she held it up between us like evidence.

'It stopped the afternoon Gaunt kept us behind,' she said. 'Ten past three. I never wound it again.' We both looked across the hall to where Mr Gaunt, greyer now and wearing a cardigan, was explaining his allotment to a circle of mums. He caught our eye and grinned wider, the same grin he used to hand out detentions with, as if they were sweets.

I remembered the play. I had been the Cheshire Cat, my face striped with my mum's eyeliner, and Priya had been Alice, too tall for the dress, chin propped on one hand through the whole second act because she was bored of waiting for her cue. We had stood in the wings and decided that the grown-up world was a stage we had been cast in by accident.

Priya wound the watch there and then, a small iron click under the noise. The second hand jerked, then ran. 'Right,' she said, 'let's go and find out who's still in Wonderland.' We headed for the raffle table, and the tick followed us all the way across the hall.
