Wonder Woman with golden lasso
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full-colour tattoo of Wonder Woman in mid-action, with her dark blue hair flying and a golden lasso looping around her body and out to the edges. Bold black outlines and red, gold and blue ink give it a comic-book look, with some shading on the skin tones and armour. The figure fills the frame diagonally, with the lasso sweeping through the composition.

At ten past three the corridor on Ward 9 smelled of hand gel and cold toast, and Nadia had been on her feet for nineteen hours. Eight-year-old Kofi in bay three had refused his tablets since teatime, folding his arms like a small magistrate. "You can't make me," he said. "Wonder Woman's lasso makes people tell the truth. Yours doesn't."

Nadia pulled a stool to the bed and sat down. She had a dressing trolley, a pen torch and a roll of gold ribbon she'd found in the craft cupboard. She looped it once around the bed rail, then fixed him with a look. "Right. Truth. Did you eat the crusts off your sandwich, or did you feed them to the plant?" Kofi glanced at the spider plant on the windowsill and sighed. "The plant."
They went on like that for a while. He told her about his dad's van with the broken wing mirror, the dinosaur he'd drawn for the night staff, and the thing he was scared of, which he would only say once the ribbon had gone round the rail twice. She told him that the hospital at this hour was run by people in soft shoes who never got thanked. Her own lasso, she admitted, was mostly tinsel and stubbornness. He laughed, which was the point.
At quarter to four the tablets went down in a cup of blackcurrant squash. Kofi asked whether Wonder Woman ever got tired. Nadia thought of the red boots mid-stride, the hair streaming out behind, the gold rope that never once tangled. "Probably," she said, tying the ribbon off in a neat bow. "But she always coils it up ready for the next one." By the time she stood, he had the loose end wound twice around his wrist and was already asleep.
