Harry, Hermione and Ron name lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows the names Harry, Hermione and Ron in large, looping hand-lettered script, with the capitals H and R extended into decorative swirls. Small doodles of a lightning bolt, round glasses, a crown, stars and a sun-like burst are scattered around the letters. The thin, even brown linework sits on a tan, aged-paper style background, with the lettering filling most of the square composition.

You give the three of them the attic room because it is the only one with a window onto the harbour, and because they arrive together, soaked to the knees, with a cardboard box of mended spectacles that Harry says belongs to a chemist in Saltwick who will never pay for them. Hermione signs the register in a neat, impatient hand and asks whether the Wi-Fi reaches the attic. It does not. Ron says that is the most sensible thing anyone has said in the house since March, and he means it kindly.

They play cards at the kitchen table after supper, Ron losing every hand and paying his debts in paper crowns from a box of Christmas crackers he found in the larder. Hermione keeps the tally in the margin of her library book. Harry mends the frames with a jeweller's screwdriver and stops only to watch the sky over the breakwater, where the clouds have gone the colour of slate. When the storm comes it comes all at once. A bolt splits the pier lamp in two, and the three of them run down the shingle in their dressing gowns, laughing like children who have been told not to.

At first light you find them sitting on the sea wall. The lamp glass lies in glittering pieces along the slipway, and Harry is holding one of his own spectacle lenses up to the sun, cracked straight through in the shape of a zigzag. Hermione says she will pay for the lamp out of the ledger. Ron says he will pay for the lens out of his crowns. Neither of them asks you for anything.

That evening you open the register and read their three names in three hands, the H of Harry curling out like a loop of rope, and you find the ink has run where a drop of seawater fell on the page. You leave it as it is.
