Heart with script and infinity loop design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing on pale paper shows an outlined heart whose single continuous line flows down into a figure-eight loop at the bottom. Cursive script sits inside the heart's lower curve, and the strokes vary in thickness to suggest a calligraphic hand. The design is rendered in black line only, with no shading or colour, and the composition is centred with plenty of empty space around it.

The clockwork in the lantern room had to be wound every four hours, and Ada Penrose had counted the turns for eleven years without once letting the weight touch the floor. On the night the relief boat failed to come, she wound it herself at midnight and again at four, her hands smelling of paraffin and cold brass.

Below, in the log, she had drawn the sweep of the beam the way her father taught her: one unbroken pencil stroke for each rotation, looping out over the water and back. Tonight the strokes ran into one another at the foot of the page, where the sea had come up over the lower rock, and she could no longer tell which pass was which. She wrote the hour beside them in a hand that had grown careful with the cold.
At first light a fishing smack rounded the point with a stranger aboard, a young man in a borrowed oilskin who said his name was Daniel Marr and that he had been sent to take her off the rock. He looked at the log over her shoulder and asked why every line was joined. She told him the light never stops, so the record shouldn't either.
He took the pencil from her and drew a small heart around the last loop, then wrote a name inside it in slow, looping letters. Ada read it, laughed for the first time in days, and took the pencil back. She closed the loop without lifting it from the page, wound the clock once more, and went down the stairs.
