Matching crown finger tattoos
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are held together, each with a small black crown tattoo on one finger. The left crown is clearly drawn with solid black linework, while the right one on the neighbouring finger is smaller and partly in shadow, appearing to be a crown-like mark. The photograph is black and grey, with a dark background and soft lighting that leaves the hands as the main focus.

The paddle at Hythe Bridge lock had stuck again, so Nell and I stood on the wet towpath at six in the morning arguing over whose turn it was to crank it. She said it was mine. I said the crank was hers, and we had been like that since we were nineteen, which is why the Patience was ours and not her father's.

We had the crowns done the winter the cut froze solid. There was a woman in Banbury who worked from the back room of a barber's, with a lamp clipped to a shelf and a tin of Indian ink that smelled faintly of pennies. She drew two small crowns on greaseproof paper, three points and a plain band, the way a child draws a queen. "Heirs," she said, and Nell laughed so hard the needle slipped, which is why mine sits neater and hers has that smudge of shadow beneath it, like a crown left out in the rain.
Nell's father died in March, and the boat went to us with a leaking stove, a stack of unpaid mooring fees and a letter from the trust saying the lock gates would be replaced by autumn. We argued about that too, late into the night with the kettle going cold. In the end we took the Patience down to the basin and tied her up under the willows, and Nell pressed her hand flat on the tiller the way her father used to.
Now the crank goes between us, one of us on the handle and the other on the gate, both our crowns catching the lamplight on the iron. Nobody at Hythe Bridge has ever asked which of us is the queen. We let the water settle and the gate groan open, and we let them think it is only a joke.
