Love yourself script on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells out the words love yourself in a flowing, handwritten script that runs across the wrist. The letters are drawn with mostly solid, even black lines, with a small motif at the left and a sweeping underline beneath the words. The photograph is in black and white, with a blurred grey background that keeps the focus on the lettering.

Dear Nell,

The galley on the Marjorie Gale has a porthole the size of a dinner plate, and I am writing this with a slate pencil on the back of a bill of lading because the notepaper ran out at Antwerp. Cook says I am to scrub the coppers before supper and stop mooning at the sea. So this is a letter, written in the ten minutes between the bread coming out and the tea going on.
You will laugh, but Mr Haddow the bosun has taken to copying sentences from the flyleaves of books he finds in the drowned men's kit. Last week he showed me one, written in a careful hand that had clearly been practised. Love yourself, it said, with a little bird drawn before the first letter and a line swept under the whole thing like the wake behind us. Haddow thought it was sampler nonsense, the sort of thing a parlour wall would be hung with. I told him it sounded like something a man says to himself when nobody else is going to bother.
He did not argue. He sat on the coal bunker with his cap in his lap and asked me to write it out for him, so I did, and he folded it into his shirt pocket as if it were a ration ticket.
I have copied it onto the inside of the flour bin lid in pencil, bird and underline and all. Cook has seen it and said nothing, which from him is a blessing. When we dock at Hull I will post you the lid if the railway lets me, or else you will have to take my word for it.
Your brother, Tom
