Nell had carried the sheet of transfers for a fortnight before she dared use one. Her cousin Rhys had bought the pack from a market stall in Stourport, and the paper was soft as bread, the designs printed in a black that looked rubbed off a chimney: a triangle with a circle inside it, a pair of round spectacles, a bolt of lightning. On the Thursday the lock keeper at Hatton sent word that the Kestrel Rose would wait three hours for the flight. Her mother was below deck arguing with the kettle. Nell tore the bolt free, damped the backing with the cloth from the tiller, and pressed it hard to the inside of her forearm, counting to thirty the way her grandfather had taught her to count rivets.

When she peeled the paper away, the bolt had come out pale grey and a little crooked, like a crack in an old plate. She thought it looked ridiculous. Then the first gate groaned open, the water rushed in under the hull, and the cold of it made her laugh out loud, and her mother came up the steps asking what the joke was.

"Nothing," Nell said, tugging her sleeve down. "Just a bit of weather."
