Deathly Hallows symbol with Always lettering designs

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

Four separate design variations show the Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle enclosing a circle and a vertical line, placed beside the word Always. The lettering ranges from flowing cursive to a bolder, rounded hand, and one version adds small stars and a short stroke beside the text. All four are drawn in clean black outline on a white background.

You are scraping burnt porridge from the bottom of the big pan when the wireless crackles and the skipper says Dessie's name the way men say a name they have stopped expecting to hear again. The Ardent is four hours out of Grimsby, the swell has got under the galley door, and the tins on the shelf knock together like a bad set of teeth.

Dessie left you the tin. He never said why, only pushed it across the steel table on the last morning and told you not to open it at sea. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, there is a flat brass triangle no bigger than a biscuit, a pewter ring the size of a shilling, and a length of steel rod filed straight by somebody with patience. On the card lining the lid, someone has written ALWAYS in three hands: first a looping copperplate, then a fat rounded print, then a shaky scrawl that must be his.

At four bells the weather comes through, all gale warnings and no mercy. You stand at the porthole with the tin open on the shelf and set the three pieces on the sill, the triangle over the ring, the rod laid through the middle like a line drawn by a child who has been told to stay inside the lines. The grey light comes up over the Dogger bank and the shapes sit exactly where they were meant to sit, which is a comfort you did not ask for.

You breathe on the misted glass and write the word with a fingertip, in the looping hand, the one Dessie could never manage. Then you fold the card back into the tin, set it on the warm stove top where the brass will take the heat, and put the kettle on, because the crew will want something hot and somebody has to keep the lamp lit.
