Dear Tamsin, I have been staring at the reunion invitation for three nights now, and Mr Pyle's handwritten note at the bottom still asks everyone to bring something from the old days. I went up to Mum's loft this morning and found the biscuit tin we buried under the cricket pavilion the summer we were eleven. Inside it there is a cardboard ticket stamped Platform Nine and Three Quarters, a pair of round spectacles with one arm mended in sellotape, and a lightning bolt cut from a cereal box and painted silver for the Year Six play nobody remembers.

You will recall that we spent every wet lunchtime in the sports hall practising the shout. Riddikulus, we would bellow at Gareth Nolan whenever he came near us with his fists, and he would stop dead and blink while we pictured him in a tutu and a pair of yellow wellingtons. It never once made him laugh, but it made us feel braver than we were. Then there was the night we crept out past the bike sheds to test the smoke charm on the car park, Expecto Patronum, and your torch flickered off just as I was sure something silver had jumped out of my wand. We swore we had seen it. We never agreed on what it looked like.

I rang the school office yesterday to ask whether the hall still smells of floor polish. The woman on the phone said it does, and that someone has finally repainted the words Mischief Managed above the stage, in a shade of green nobody can quite agree on. I laughed so hard I had to sit down on the stairs.

So here is my plan. I am bringing the tin, and I am bringing the spectacles, and you are bringing whatever you still shout when you are frightened. Meet me by the bike sheds at seven. Bring a torch, and don't be late.
