Headphones and sound wave on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A pair of over-ear headphones with a coiled cable trailing down towards the wrist, drawn in detailed grey shading with highlights on the padding and metal fittings. A thin sound wave in red, green and blue sits between the earcups as the only colour. The design is set against a plain skin background on a dark backdrop, with the forearm and wrist filling the frame.

Mrs Idris Penhale had kept the night desk at Gull Point Radio for nineteen years, and in all that time nobody had rung in asking for the sound between two lights. Sat with a mug gone cold, she drew the coiled cable of the old padded headset taut until the jack seated in the board with its usual click, and listened to the hiss that always came before the Atlantic weather.

At ten past two a voice came down the line, thin as thread, asking whether the station could play the thing it had played the winter the lifeboat went out. She told him there was no such record in the library. He said she should look under the cabinet, where the spare tapes went. She did, and found a reel labelled in pencil with a date she knew too well.
She threaded it on the machine and turned the dial down low. Under the static came a hum like a boat's engine idling in fog, then a pulse, and she swore she could see it in the dark of the booth as much as hear it: a red line, then green, then blue, rising and falling like someone breathing slowly. The line went quiet. In the morning the call log showed a number for the old lighthouse, dark since 1961.
She kept the reel. Every night after that she played the hum before the first record, and at the harbour mouth the lamp on the breakwater answered with three flashes, keeping time with it.
