Braided armband tattoo on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded braided band wraps around the arm, with each strand drawn in heavy black outline and grey tones to show depth. A thin curved line with a swirl rises from the top edge of the band, against plain skin and a pale grey background. The tattoo is shown in close focus with soft, even lighting.

Maud had been plaiting the cord since before the bells, six strands of tarred hemp she'd kept soft by working them through her palms, and now the old man from the harbour wanted it finished by noon. "It's for the Penhallow wedding," he said, as though she might not know. She knew. Everyone in Porthgwidden knew who was marrying whom, and that the bride had refused to walk up the church path without something knotted round her husband's arm.

Maud's fingers were stiff from the cold. She counted the crossings under her breath, over and under, the way her mother had taught her on the slipway, until the band was wide enough to span a man's forearm twice. Then she pulled the last strand tight and let the end curl away from the braid, a loose tail that lifted in the draught off the water like a question nobody had asked yet.
The wedding itself went off without her. She heard about it from the baker's girl: the groom had tugged his sleeve up at the altar, the band had caught on his cufflink, and for a moment the whole congregation had held its breath while the vicar fumbled with the knot. It came free. Nobody could say how.
Maud spent that afternoon on the quay mending nets, thinking about the loose end. She had never made a cord that didn't need untying, and she was not sure it had been a mistake.
