Heart and anchor temporary tattoo designs
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
Two temporary tattoo transfer designs sit in clear plastic packaging beside printed instructions. One shows a red heart with a brown banner, and the other shows a grey anchor wrapped in a blue ribbon, with the text Tie the knot printed along the bottom. The bold outlines and flat colour fills are typical of traditional flash designs, and the image has a light, pale blue background.

The instruction cards were the last thing to go in, which Marjorie said was typical, because the cards were the only part anybody actually read. Four hundred sachets sat on the trestle table at the back of the shop, and I fed them in one at a time while the kettle boiled dry behind me.

The hearts went on the left, the anchors on the right. Marjorie had insisted the lettering on the banners face the right way on the packet, which meant it came out reversed on the skin. 'People like a thing that's been turned about,' she said, 'so long as the sentiment's the right way up.' I didn't argue. I'd already argued about the font and lost.
On the Saturday the first return came back in a padded envelope with a note scribbled on the slip: WRONG DESIGN, WE ORDERED ROPE NOT FLOWERS. Marjorie read it, sat down on the stool by the till and laughed until she had to wipe her glasses. She boxed up two replacement hearts, stuck a sticker on the lid that read Sorry, we are all a bit mixed up, and told me to stop fretting about the fonts.
That evening I took the last anchor out of its sleeve and held it up to the window. The light came through the pale paper, and TIE THE KNOT read the right way round from the wrong side, as if the whole shop had been waiting to be seen from behind.
