Team Bride temporary tattoo designs in gold
Colour · Flash
Seven square temporary tattoo transfers sit on a pale grey surface, most reading Team Bride and one reading Bride. Each design shows a diamond ring with rays above and an oval band around the lettering, drawn in a fine, clean outline with script type. The ink is a metallic gold on white backing, and the sheets are arranged in a loose grid with slight overlap.

The transfers were meant to last the weekend, which is what the packet promised in gold lettering, and by Saturday afternoon Priya had two diamond rings on her wrist and one on her ankle, all of them slightly crooked because she had applied them with a damp flannel and a bottle of hotel shampoo she swore was conditioner. Nobody could agree on who was actually Team Bride. Dee said it was whoever paid for the minibus. Marguerite said it was whoever cried first at the hen dinner, which was her, and she would like that written down.

We had seven sheets between us, bought from a market stall in Margate for a pound each, and only one of them said Bride on its own. That one went on Tessa, who had booked the hotel and the boat and had earned it, and who sat on the edge of the bath holding her foot out like a cat being inspected. The gold was thinner than it looked on the packet. By Sunday morning the rings had faded to the colour of old brass, and the rays above them had blurred into little suns that Dee said looked like a child's drawing of the sun, which Tessa took personally.
On the ferry home the wedding was still eleven months away, and the real ring was sitting in a drawer in Leeds where Tessa had left it so she wouldn't lose it in the sea. Marguerite asked what she would do when the transfer wore off. Tessa said she would just put another one on, that was the good thing about them. Then she licked her thumb and pressed the last curl of a sun back down on her ankle, very gently, the way you would smooth a letter before posting it.
