A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You buy the sheet from the stall outside the launderette on Ashgate Road for sixty pence, the last of the coins you fished out from under the lift doors. The lift at Harrow Point has been broken since March, so you climb all eleven floors with the sheet folded in your back pocket, counting landings the way Nan counted beads, one for every promise she never got round to keeping.

On the eighth floor the strip light is buzzing, and Kemi from 4B is sitting on the concrete step with her phone dimmed to nothing. You hold the sheet out. She takes the gold cross, the long one with the notched arms, and you take the small silver one with points like cut glass. You rub them down with the edge of a spoon from your bag, the way the stall man showed you, and the foil lifts clean and stays. Somewhere above, a radio is playing a song about rain that nobody is listening to.

Kemi's mum shouts her name up the stairwell, and Kemi goes, leaving the gold cross half stuck to the cuff of her coat. You stay where you are. The sheet has no names printed on it, nothing to say what the hearts are for or why the chains curve the way they do, only shapes that seem to have been chosen on purpose. You peel off the last silver heart, carry it up the final flight to the roof door, which is chained, and press it onto the cold rail where the morning sun will find it first.
