Heart and banner tattoo on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A red heart with a scalloped outline sits on the upper arm, with a banner across its centre reading AS YOU WISH. Blue and purple flowers with green leaves decorate the lower right side, and a larger floral tattoo is visible on the sleeve above. Bold black outlines and solid fills in red, green, blue and yellow give the piece a classic flash look.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boarding house at Saltcote had seven rooms and one rule, which Mrs Abernethy gave every guest on the front step before they had set down their cases. Ask for what you like, she said, but ask once. She answered every request with the same three words, wrote it in her ledger, and went back to her tea. Nobody argued with the ledger.

A fisherman's widow came in October asking that her son be brought home from the Dogger Bank. Mrs Abernethy wrote it down and said as you wish. The boy walked up the lane that Thursday with a cut on his chin and a story about a snapped mast. Later a lodger from Hull asked to be forgotten by the woman he had left behind. Mrs Abernethy looked at him over her spectacles for a long time before she said as you wish, and he went out to the cliff path smiling like a man who had put down a heavy bag.

In the spring the forget-me-nots came up along the cliff so thickly that the council sent a man with a hoe. He worked three days, and on the fourth morning the blue heads were back on the chalk, nodding at him. The lodger from Hull sat on the bench by the gate every afternoon looking at the water. When the postman asked his name he gave it cheerfully, and when the postman asked where he was from, he could not say.

Mrs Abernethy kept one wish for herself. Each night she set a single forget-me-not on the sill of the room at the top of the stairs, and each morning it had been moved to the window, facing the sea. She never said what she had asked for. The next landlady found the ledger in a drawer after the funeral, and there was only one entry in the old woman's own hand, which read: as you wish, Mrs Abernethy.
