Teapot and rose with Make Tea Not War banner

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A teapot with a dark body, gold banding and a pale lid sits above a large red rose with green leaves. A cloud-shaped scroll across the top reads MAKE TEA NOT WAR in black capitals. Bold black outlines, solid fills and simple shading give the piece a classic flash look, with red, green and yellow ink on a light skin tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain came in sideways at half eight, the way it always does on a Tuesday, and Stan Fairweather from the bread stall next door had already lost his awning pole to the wind. I watched him wrestle it upright with a face like a slammed door. We had not spoken since the business with the borrowed urn in April.

My teapot was the only thing I had left from my nan, a black enamel pot with a gold band round its middle and a lid that rattled whenever the wind got under the stall. Every morning I filled it from the flask and set out cups on a tray, and every morning the damp got into the sugar. Stan's pies smelled of gravy and spite. Nobody buys tea in a downpour, I told myself, and then a woman in a yellow mac ducked under my gazebo and asked for two.

By eleven we were both soaked, and Stan came round the back of the stalls holding a tray of unsold sausage rolls like a peace offering. "Your lot's still the only hot thing on this row," he said. I poured him a cup without a word, strong with too much sugar, the way he liked it, which I had known for twenty years without ever admitting it.

We stood under the canvas while the rain drummed on the lid, and the red rose on the enamel, the one Nan had painted over a chip in 1978, caught the grey light as if it had been waiting all morning. "Don't tell anyone," Stan said. I didn't. We sold out by two.
