Heart and music notes on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black heart sits on the inner wrist and fades into a trail of tiny dots that rises towards the top right of the frame. Several beamed and single musical notes are drawn in fine black linework at the end of the trail. The design is in black ink only and sits centrally on the wrist against plain, slightly warm skin.

By the third winter the bells of Carrow had gone quiet, and the royal clockmaker was blamed for it, which was unfair, since he had only stopped the tower clock to mend a cracked hammer. You were the one who climbed up to learn why the chimes had stopped. Nobody else in the kingdom of Vell would go, because the stair was rotten and the ringers swore the belfry held a sound nobody could hum.

At the top you found a copper heart the size of a plum, green at the seams, lying in the dust beside the bell rope. Someone had soldered it shut long ago. When you pressed your thumb to it, it was warm and began to tick the way a heart does when it is trying to be a clock. You carried it down in your coat pocket, and by the time you reached the square it had begun to leak.

Not water. Dots, small as grains of pepper, spilled from the seam and rose into the cold air, drifting towards the weathercock as though they had somewhere to be. Behind them, slowly, they arranged themselves into little hooks and flags, the tails of notes, then heads, then a whole line of them climbing the sky above the square. The ringers stood with their mouths open. The clockmaker wept into his apron.

The chimes never returned to Carrow. Instead, each dusk the little notes gather above the square and try the tune again, a little different every time, as if the heart has not yet decided how the song should end. You still keep the copper shell on your mantel. Some evenings, when the square is quiet, you press your thumb to the seam and wait for it to tick.
