Small semicolon tattoo on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small solid black semicolon sits on pale skin, with the dot as a rounded blob above a tapered comma-shaped stroke. The linework is clean and simple, with no shading, and the ink is a single dark tone. The tattoo is placed toward the right of the frame and the rest of the frame shows soft skin texture.

Dear Morag, You will remember the Harrogate job, the one with the council minutes that Mr Pell wanted set without a single stop he hadn't chosen himself. I kept one stop in that he hadn't chosen. On page ninety-four there is a semicolon I had no business putting there, because the sentence about the bridge repairs would have ended perfectly well a word earlier.

Pell found it on the proof and came down to the back room with his glasses in his hand. He asked me what I thought I was doing. I told him the clause on the left was waiting for the clause on the right, and that a full stop would have sent the reader off before the sentence had finished its business. He said nobody reads council minutes for the grammar. I said somebody must, or the bridge would never get mended.

He let it stand in the end, because the proof was already late and he was a practical man. I think he was secretly pleased. The next morning the sentence went through the press, and the semicolon came out as a neat little mark, a round dot above a tapered tail, sitting in the ink as if it meant to come back and finish its thought.

I still have the punch in my drawer, the little steel semicolon worn smooth on one side from years of being turned over in my fingers while I decided where a sentence ought to breathe.

Yours, Eileen
