Looping line and Roman numerals on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a small tattoo on the inner wrist, showing a single looping line that twists into a curved, open form with a smaller loop inside it. A line of Roman numerals, X, IV and XIII, runs beneath the loop. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading or colour, set against pale skin and a blurred dark surface in the background.

The toll-keeper at Harrow Pass wrote her accounts in Roman letters because her father had, and his father before him, and the ledger was too old to be changed. Travellers paid in knots of string rather than coin. She tied each knot onto a loop of cord that hung from a nail by the door, and the cord was never cut, so the whole trade of the valley ran in one unbroken line.

One autumn a man came down from the north with a mule and no money, only a looped strap of leather he said had been his brother's. He wanted the lowland road before the snow shut the pass. She asked what the numbers scratched beneath the buckle meant. X, IV, XIII, he said. Ten years, four days, thirteen steps. He had counted every one on the walk down, and every one, he said, was owed to somebody.
She let him through without a knot. That night she sat with the ledger open and found that her father had written the same three numbers in the margin of the first page, beside a line that curled back on itself and never closed. She traced it with her finger until the lamp guttered. Nobody, it seemed, had ever paid the first toll. The valley had simply agreed to keep crossing.
In the morning she cut a length from the cord, knotted its ends together, and hung the new ring on the nail beside the old. It was small enough to sit inside the larger loop, and the snow came down on the pass that night while she slept, with nothing left owing on either side.
