Heart and tree tattoo at the base of the neck
Botanical · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of a stylised tree sits on the upper back at the base of the neck, photographed from behind. A heart forms the centre of the trunk and crown, with leafy branches and curling vines extending to either side. The linework is solid and even on pale skin, against a plain background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Pass the bottle over, my throat's gone to dust, and keep your eyes on that bend where the tarmac gives up. The thing I'm telling you happened right there, fifty winters back, when a lorry driver called Eamon Vance pulled in beside a single tree that had no business being alive. Nothing else grew for thirty miles, but this one had a trunk split open at its heart, and vines came off it curling like someone had drawn them with a steady hand.

Eamon was hauling seed potatoes to a farm past the salt flats, and his wife Nessa had written him a letter every week of the trip, folded small and tucked behind his sun visor. That afternoon the wind took the last one out of his hand and carried it up into the branches, where it snagged on a leaf. He climbed up after it, cursing, and found the paper gone but the leaf warm, as if someone had been holding it. Beneath it, a green shoot had split the bark in the shape of a heart.
He didn't drive on. He sat under that tree three days with a flask of tea and a pencil stub, writing back to her on the backs of seed invoices, and every night the vines crept a finger's width closer to his cab. On the fourth morning he turned the lorry round, and the potatoes rotted in the back before he reached the coast.
Nessa still has the leaf. She keeps it pressed in the back of her Bible. If you're passing that way when the sun is hot enough, you'll see a tree with a heart in its trunk, growing where the sand meets the road, waiting for the next man to stop.
