Lotus tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind shows a lotus flower tattoo centred between her shoulder blades, just below the neck. The flower is drawn in fine black linework with stippled dotwork shading on the petals, and thin circles and vertical dotted lines frame it. The ink is black on pale skin against a plain wall and a blurred city backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Down the old salt road past Hollin Wells, the carriers said the water came up only where someone had been patient. Ada Venn kept the well at the bend where the track gave out. Her father had dug it, and when he died he left her the rope, the bucket, and a tin of pale seeds he had carried from the coast and never planted.

The drought lasted three summers. Dust got into the bread and the goats stopped giving milk. Each morning Ada went down to the lip of the dry shaft and sat there, drawing a circle in the grit with her heel, then another circle inside it, the way her father had taught her to measure a spring. Below the circles she pressed a dot into the sand for every bucket she had ever hauled, and then a line of dots running down toward the shaft. There were not many dots, and she was not proud of how few they were.

In the fourth spring a stranger came walking the road with a bundle on his back and asked for water. Ada gave him the bucket. He drank, then looked at the seeds in her tin and told her they opened only in standing water, and that the flower folds shut at night to keep its heat. She laughed at him. But after he had gone on up the road she tipped the seeds into the damp mud at the bottom of the shaft, where a little moisture still lay, and climbed back up the rope with her hands raw.

Rain came in the autumn, soft and grey. Ada lay awake listening to it hiss on the sand. In the morning the well was full to the rim, and at its edge a pale bloom had opened, layered in rings like a lantern, and when the sun rose it stayed open all day. Carriers still stop there. They drink, and they say you can see the circles of it from the road, and that this is how you know the water is being kept.
