Heart in a jar on a thigh

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo shows an anatomical heart inside a glass jar, with a sprouting plant, a crescent moon and small star shapes around it. The linework is bold and clean, and the heart is filled with stippled dotwork shading. The design sits on the outer thigh and fills most of the frame against a green wall.

The jar had sat on the shelf above the petrol pump since the spring the last lorry driver gave up on Gallow Wells, and nobody in the town could say whose it was. Mabel Roake dusted it every Monday and never lifted the lid, because the heart inside was still beating and she had promised her brother she would keep it from the dust and the wind.

At night the heart's pulse set the glass glowing faintly, and travellers heading east would pull onto the verge to watch the thin moon sit in the water inside it. By the second summer a green shoot had pushed through the cork, then another, and the leaves spread out over the rim like a hand held up to shade the eyes. Mabel watered it from the cistern when the rain did not come, and the heart went on keeping its slow time among the roots.

In October a woman in a dust-coloured coat came in for diesel and stood a long while in front of the shelf. She did not ask to buy it. She only said that the road had been waiting for that heart to come home, and that a thing kept too long in a jar forgets what it was for.

That night Mabel carried the jar out past the last fence post and set it down on the sand where the wind could reach the leaves. She unscrewed the lid herself. The plant leaned out over the dunes, and the heart, lighter now, lay quiet in the glass until the stars came out above it one by one.
