Heart infinity knot and anchor on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of a heart formed from interlocking infinity loops, with a looped knot passing through it and an anchor sitting beneath. The linework is solid and outlined, with grey shading along the edges of the anchor and knot to give depth. The design is centred on the ankle against a dark leather background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Tully kept the lamp at Carrow Junction, and every night she tied a length of tarred line to the foot of the signal post so the wind could not walk it off the platform. Her son Eamon had gone to sea at seventeen and wrote only when a ship put in somewhere with a post office. The porters said her knot was a true lover's knot, the working end looped twice through itself so it could not slip, and that she had learned it from a sailor who never came back for her.

The November the fog came down thick as wool, the last goods train from the coast was due at nine. Mrs Tully walked the cutting with her lantern, counting sleepers under her breath, and found the signal wire snapped and hanging across the track. She tied the lamp to the wire with her knot, looping the line through an old ship's chain that hung from the bridge rail, and held the light steady until the driver saw it and braked with yards to spare. Her hands were raw by morning, and the chain was black with rain.

Eamon came home in April with a rusted anchor shank he had hauled from the harbour at Penzance, and asked the stationmaster if it could hang somewhere useful. Mrs Tully looked at the chain for a long while, then went to her cupboard and brought out a letter she had written him and never posted. He read it standing on the platform while the rain came in sideways. Neither of them said much after that, but he bolted the anchor to the bridge where the chain had been.

The porters still tie the knot on foggy nights, though none of them knows why it has two loops. Mrs Tully's lamp is out now, but the anchor keeps the signal wire true.
