Chain anklet with heart charms
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A thin beaded chain runs diagonally across the ankle and foot, with two outlined heart charms hanging from its lower end. Each heart has a small dotted edge and a simple stroke mark inside, and the linework is delicate and even. The tattoo is in black and grey ink against a plain skin tone, with a teal background behind the leg.

Thursday, and the tide is out at Whitby. Mr Garrow has finally given me the chain work now that my hands have stopped shaking, which he says is the only thing a Sunday-born girl is good for. The order came in a brown envelope with no name on it, only a pencil sketch: a beaded chain that dips across the ankle, and two little hearts hanging from its loose end, each with a dotted rim like the edge of a postage stamp.

I wanted the hearts too neat. Garrow said a heart should look like it has been argued over. So I scored one fine line inside each, a short bar with a hook at its end, the mark my mother used to scratch into the bread before it went in the oven so we would know which loaf was ours. Then I strung nineteen silver beads on the chain and counted them out loud so I would not lose my place. The counting kept me up until the lamp ran dry.
The envelope came back on Saturday with a second note in the same square hand. Could the hearts be fixed so they would not swing apart. Could the smaller one sit a little higher, nearer the other. I wrote back that a chain should keep a little distance from what it carries, or it wears through. No reply came, but on Monday a woman in a green coat walked into the shop, asked for Garrow by name, and said the anklet was for her sister, who sails for Hull on Friday's boat.
I soldered the last joint myself and gave the chain one small shake on the bench. The two hearts knocked together with a sound like a bell that had not quite decided to ring.
