Lotus tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus flower sits centred on the ankle, drawn in fine black outline with mandala-style detailing inside the petals. Single dots are placed above and below the flower, and the design uses linework with little or no shading. The photo is taken from the front of the ankle against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The drawing had been folded into quarters for so long that the creases had gone soft as cloth. Ines unfolded it on the chart table with the flat of her hand, careful of the damp, and found the lotus still there in ink, its petals stacked like the layers of a closed fan, each one ruled inside with tiny chevrons and loops that Teodor had made with a steel nib and no ruler at all.

Teodor had been the cook's mate, a quiet man from Gdańsk who could not swim and said so cheerfully. He drew during the night watches, when the galley stove was banked and the sea went black under the hull. Ines kept the engine logs and had no patience for ornament, and she had mocked the patterns once. He had only tapped the page and said the middle was the important part, and everything else was there to hold it up.
Two dots sat above the flower and two below, one for each port they had not reached. Cape Verde had been skipped for a storm and the Azores had been a rumour passed along the rail. Teodor said the dots were where a sailor paused, between the work and whatever came next. Ines had pressed the page flat under the chart weight that day and written nothing in the log.
Off Madeira the fog lifted and the water went flat as slate. Ines carried the drawing up on deck, found the place where the bow lifted and fell, and folded the page once more along the old crease. She tucked it into the lining of her coat, where the damp could not reach it, and went below to log the wind.
