Lotus with semicolon on inner wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single lotus flower in black linework sits across the inner wrist, with layered petals and a central bud. Fine dots fill parts of the petals and the outer edges, and a small dot sits above the flower with a semicolon below it. The ink is black only, set against pale skin on a plain, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Marjorie, I am writing this before the details blur, because you will not believe what Mr Okafor's band played at the Lyceum on Saturday. Half the floor was still foxtrotting when the saxophone slid into a slow tune nobody knew, and Dot Harker, who has sat at the end table every week since the spring, stood up with her gloves still on and walked to the middle of the boards as if someone had called her by name.

Nobody moved to stop her. The ceiling there has painted lotus flowers, the petals layered one over another and stippled at their edges where the decorator pressed the plaster with a blunt stick, and under those lights Dot looked like something unfolding in slow motion. She did not dance so much as wait, turning her wrist and letting the music find her. Mr Okafor held the last note until the whole room was breathing with her. When the tune finished, she gave a small bow and returned to her chair as though she had only fetched a handkerchief.

Afterwards I asked her why she had waited four months to go out there. She laughed and touched the little mark she wears on the inside of her wrist, a dot above a curved stroke, the sort of thing you see in a schoolroom grammar book. She said her late husband had taught her that a semicolon is for a sentence that is not finished, only pausing to take a breath. Then she said she had been holding her breath since March and was tired of it.

On Monday there was a card on my doormat with the programme tucked inside. Beside the list of waltzes she had pencilled a dot, then a curved mark, and beneath them a single word: next. Marjorie, I am going on Saturday. Do bring your good shoes.
