Heart padlock and key on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a heart-shaped padlock with dense scrollwork and a central keyhole, with a long ornate key hanging from its lower edge. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, with soft grey tones giving the metal a raised, engraved look. The design fills the upper arm against a striped sleeve and a blurred outdoor background.

The locksmith's daughter in Carn Velin was the only one in the valley who could make a lock that a miner could not pick with a bent nail. Her father had taught her the trade in the back of the forge, and when he died of the black lung the workshop passed to her along with his debts and his bad temper toward anyone who came asking for credit.

One February a young shift-man named Tobias Renn came up the path with a heart-shaped tin box that his mother had kept her wedding ring in. The lid had rusted shut. He wanted it open without breaking the hinge, because the ring was to go to his sister when she married, and he had promised. She told him it would cost him a week of his wages and a day of his patience. He paid the wages and sat on her bench for four hours while she filed the ward and coaxed the spring.
When the lid finally lifted, there was no ring inside, only a folded paper with his mother's handwriting. It said the ring had been sold the winter before the mine flooded, and that the box was to be given to whoever came with a key the locksmith had made for her, because she had known the girl would never refuse a fair price. The locksmith read it twice. Then she took the long key from its hook above the bellows, the one she had filed in her father's style, and laid it beside the box without a word.
Tobias went down the mountain that evening with the box under his arm and the paper in his pocket. The locksmith kept the key on its hook for the rest of her life, and never once sold a lock that anyone else could open.
