You learn the canal in the wet months, when the towpath turns to grease and the locks groan like old men getting up from chairs. Your father's narrowboat, the Marigold Rose, is moored below the lock at Hatherby, and every evening you walk the length of her roof to check the padlock on the front hatch. It is a heart-shaped brass thing with scrollwork worn smooth by his thumb, and the key that opens it hangs on a loop of greasy cord around your neck, where it knocks your breastbone whenever you climb the lock gates.

He never told you what was inside the hatch. You asked once, the winter the ice closed the cut, and he only tapped the lock and said that a thing kept safe is a thing you can give away whole. You thought that was the kind of nonsense men say over a pint. Then the bailiffs came down the towpath in March, and a woman with a clipboard asked whose boat it was, and your father, who had never once lied to you, looked at the water for a long time before he answered.
On the last night before the sale you sat on the roof with the key in your fist and the lamps of Hatherby swaying in the black water below. You fitted the key and turned it. The hatch gave with a sigh, and inside, folded in oilcloth, lay his logbook, every lock he had ever worked, and beneath it a tin with your name scratched on the lid in his careful capitals. You didn't open the tin. You slid the logbook into your coat and pushed the hatch shut, and the lock clicked back into its heart like a held breath let go.
